Postal Unions Join Forces To Save America’s Postal Service Rallies Set for Sept. 27 in Every Congressional District

The APWU has joined forces with the three other postal unions to designate Sept. 27 as a day of action to Save America’s Postal Service.

Together, the APWU and the National Association of Letter Carriers, the National Postal Mail Handlers Union and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association will rally in every congressional district in the country to build support for H.R. 1351, a bill introduced in the House by Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA).

Rep. Issa Does It Again! Spending Taxpayers’ Money to Bash the USPS?

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), who likes to portray himself as a fierce opponent of wasting taxpayers’ money,  has created a slick, high-tech Web site that bashes the Postal Service, using — you guessed it — taxpayers’ money.

The Web site, a production of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, is intended to generate support for legislation sponsored by Rep. Issa that would destroy the Postal Service as we know it.

APWU President to Testify Before Senate Committee

APWU President Cliff Guffey will testify before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on Sept. 6 about the financial crisis facing the Postal Service and what Congress must do to address it.

“I will tell members of the Senate Committee that the future of the Postal Service is in their hands. They have a solemn duty to save the nation’s mail system, which is the nerve center of a $1 trillion industry” the union president said.

USPS: No Excessing for Failure to Bid on NTFT Jobs

The USPS has instructed Area Labor Relations Managers that employees may not be excessed because they fail to bid on Non-Traditional Full-Time (NTFT) duty assignments. The notice [PDF] was sent in response to union allegations that management is trying to force senior employees to resign or retire by threatening to reassign them outside of their bid office if they don’t bid on non-traditional jobs.

Locations Announced For 740 New Jobs In the Motor Vehicle Craft

In accordance with the 2010-2015 Collective Bargaining Agreement, the USPS has agreed to establish 740 new assignments in Vehicle Maintenance Facilities. A list [PDF | XLS] provided to the union on Aug. 30 specifies the locations for the new positions and indicates whether they are Level 8, 9, or 10 Automotive Technician or Lead Technician positions.

What Cannot be Won at the Bargaining Table by the Postal Service, Could be Changed on Capitol Hill

By now you have read what the USPS has asked Congress to allow it to do in order to help alleviate their money problems. They are looking to lay off 120,000 USPS employees, remove USPS employees from the Federal Employees Health Benefits program (FEHBP) and withdraw from both CSRS and FERS retirement programs. These employees currently have a no layoff provision in their contract. In the last round of contract negotiations with the APWU sacrifices were made in order for APWU members to continue to have the no layoff provision in our contract. Our negotiated protection from layoffs, our retirement and our healthcare can all be altered by Congress with the passage of one bill.

Tell Your Legislator: Save USPS, Stop Layoffs, Support H.R. 1351

With headlines predicting the imminent demise of the Postal Service — and management brazenly exploiting the crisis to attack postal employees — the APWU is asking union members to contact their members of Congress and urge them to take action to save the USPS and protect our jobs.

A brochure with that message will be sent to every APWU member in the next several days — so look for it in your mail.
