The Threat is REAL❗

Below is a statement from APWU President Mark Dimondstein on the White House plan to privatize the United States Postal Service.

The White House proposal on restructuring the federal government released today, “Delivering Government Solutions in the 21st Century,” delivered nothing but misinformation and, if implemented, would end regular mail and package services at an affordable cost to 157 million addresses every day. Furthermore, the White House plan is an attack on many federal agencies and the public services they provide.

The White House’s plan states, “Like many European nations the United States could privatize its postal operator…” What’s left unsaid is European nations charge substantially more for mail services delivered in a much smaller area. They also regularly raise the cost of delivery. For example, the cost of sending a letter in the United Kingdom has increased 80 percent over the past decade. By comparison, the U.S. has the lowest postage rates in the industrialized world.

Eliminating the universal service obligation, as the plan suggests, would hurt business and individuals alike, and would be a dagger aimed at the heart of rural America and undermine e-commerce.

The draconian plan uses “burdening the taxpayers” as justification to promote the privatization of the U.S. Postal Service when the truth is USPS is self-supporting and receives no tax dollars for postal operations.

And, while letter mail volumes are lower, package delivery is up substantially. No institution is better suited for the e-commerce revolution than USPS. The public postal service serves each and every person and belongs to the people of this country. According to recent surveys by Gallup and the Pew Research Center, it enjoys the highest level of satisfaction and trust of any government service or agency, rating the highest among young people.

Privatizing the Postal Service is not in the public interest or the interest of postal workers and would be nothing more than a raid by corporate pirates on a national treasure.

This outrageous White House plan should be a wake-up call to every postal worker and APWU member. The threats of postal privatization, the threats to decent union jobs, the threats to good services, are real.

The American Postal Workers Union stands with the people of the country and our many allies in the ongoing fight to ensure a vibrant public Postal Service for generations to come.

More information and calls for action will be forthcoming.

Important Updates

This election we will be relying more on in person contact with members. The best way, other than door to door, is contact at their worksite. To that end, we need your help to update all accessible worksites for your local. This election is crucial. Most elections are but this one even more so. We need a labor friendly Governor to stop the horrible bills coming out of Tallahassee and labor friendly US Senator to keep a check on attacks on the Federal level as well as Supreme Court and other judicial nominations.

I can’t express enough how critical it is to educate our members and get them to the polls. There is an energized all-out attack directed at us and we need to do the same to counter the attack. We need this for the future of our members, their families, our unions, and all working people. Anyone that doubts this has not been paying attention.

Please take the time and complete our Accessible Local Union Worksites Google form. Click Here.

Many of you are public sector or otherwise have inaccessible worksites, so be thinking of ways that you can educate and get information to those members, union bulletin boards, shop stewards, local union mail, newsletters, etc.

We will also be relying more on volunteers this election. I forwarded an email from State Fed President Mike Williams to you earlier today with a link for volunteer sign-ups. Please get that information out to your members and encourage their participation.

Together in Solidarity we can win for working people, but we need to be on our best game. Are you ready?

Solidarity Works!

APWU Reaches Agreement on an Updated RI-399 Process

06/26/2018 - After decades of jurisdictional disputes, the American Postal Workers Union (APWU) reached agreement with the National Postal Mail Handlers Union (NPMHU) and the Postal Service on an updated RI-399 procedure for jurisdictional work assignments to Clerks and Mail Handlers.

In a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding, the APWU improved the R1-399 dispute resolution procedures, resolved the docket of disputes, and required accurate and updated inventories to protect existing and future Clerk work.

“I want to thank Ron Suslak, Queens Area Local President and the APWU’s representative on the NDRC, whose outstanding leadership and work on RI-399 over many years led to this agreement.   I also want to thank Assistant Director (B) Clerk Division Lynn Pallas-Barber, Industrial Relations Director Vance Zimmerman, and the APWU’s attorneys who spent months working with Brother Suslak to reach this important deal to protect Clerk work and fix a broken process,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein.  “We can now move forward with a faster and better procedure to settle disputes over Postal Service jurisdictional work assignments to the Mail Handlers.”

06/18/2018 - Brother Steven G. Raymer, who served as the union’s Maintenance Division Director for the past 17 years, was on the union’s National Executive Board and a lifetime trade unionist died suddenly from a heart attack on June 16, 2018.  Steve was 61 at the time of his death.

“We are all deeply saddened and still in shock over the untimely passing of Brother Raymer.  Our heartfelt thoughts go to his wife Nancy, daughters Allison and Jessica, his three grandchildren and his extended family,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein. “Up until the last days of his life, he was working on behalf of our members – getting ready for contract talks, national arbitrations and planning for our convention. We salute his many contributions over the years and his deep dedication to the APWU and its members.”

Brother Raymer, a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp., was hired into the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) in 1982 as a clerk prior to transferring to the maintenance division in 1987. In 1989, he was promoted to Mail Processing Equipment Mechanic (MPE).

In 1990, Brother Raymer was elected by his co-workers as president of the Madison Wisconsin Area APWU Local Union. He served in that position until 2001, when he was elected as APWU National Maintenance Division Director.

ACTION ALERT! Protect Our Veterans' Healthcare

A Senate bill set to be voted on Tuesday could lead to a total dismantling and privatization of the health care system our veterans want and need.

Christina, we need you to pick up the phone and call your Senators at 833-480-1637 and tell them you strongly oppose to the VA MISSION Act (S. 2372).

https://can2-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/data/000/179/942/original/Screen_Shot_2018-05-21_at_11.42.26_AM.pngWorkers on the frontlines of the VA have proposed changes that would protect the future of the VA health care system - including keeping essential primary care services within the VA. Yet none of these changes were made in Congress. Every dollar spent on privatized care deprives our veterans of the specialized care offered in our VAs - specialized care that saves their lives and helps veterans heal faster.

Please call 833-480-1637 and feel free to use the script below. Make the call twice, once to each of your Senators. Do this now: the future of OUR Veterans Administration is at stake.

Here's an example of the message you should leave our Senators:

My name is [Insert your name - and please let them know if you are a Veteran!], I live in [YOUR CITY AND STATE]. I’m calling today to ask you to vote NO on S. 2372 , the VA Mission Act. Every dollar spent on privatized care deprives our veterans of the specialized care we offer in our VA - specialized care that saves their lives and helps veterans heal more effectively. This bill will also create a BRAC commission leading to the closure of some VA facilities."

Please end by asking your Senator to vote NO on the VA Mission Act (S. 2372) when it comes to the Senate floor. Once you hang up, please call 833-480-1637 again to speak with your other Senator’s office.
